Old Ratcliffian's News

It was an honour to represent Ratcliffe College on Saturday 14th April 2012 at our first-ever
Old Ratcliffian’s West Coast Reunion Dinner.  We met at “Boccacios on the Lake”,
Westlake Village, Los Angeles, a truly beautiful setting overlooking a lake at sunset.
Most unusually for California at any time of the year, especially springtime, the previous day
had seen a heavy storm bring much of the State to a complete halt – Californians do not know
how to negotiate wet roads!  Nevertheless, the wonderful, mid-80s temperature returned for our reunion day, ensuring the perfect conditions in such an environment.

After initial introductions Joe Maskrey (60) initiated the formal proceedings with Grace, whereupon we enjoyed a sumptuous and most convivial meal during which I brought all of our guests up to date with exciting news from Ratcliffe. Joe and his wife, Joan, had very kindly accommodated me at his impressive horse ranch on my arrival in California ten days earlier.  Most generously, they then hosted all of the reunion guests at a splendid luncheon on their ranch the following day, after several of us had attended a rather special Mass at the local Roman Catholic Church overlooking an expansive valley towards the Santa Monica Mountains.

Headmaster.

Old Ratcliffians, we have been able to arrange a 6-a-side Celebrity Cricket Match
and Sporting Lunch here at Ratcliffe on Saturday 16th June, in aid of the School’s
2012 Annual Fund.
The aim of the day is for everyone, either playing or spectating, to have a great day out
and along the way help us raise £10,000 to build an outdoor fitness and agility course that
can be used by the pupils here at Ratcliffe.
There are a number of ways you can help.
• Buy a team – £1500 each team will have one sporting professional and five amateurs.
There are only 6 teams, so if you are interested in participating please contact us
as soon as possible to secure your place.(To include 3 course lunch, wine and hog roast)
Sporting Lunch – £35 per head. Come and watch the cricket and then mingle with friends and sporting
celebrities during lunch and at a lunchtime Question and Answer session. We would
encourage you to take the opportunity to invite other friends, who may not have been to
Ratcliffe before, to come and join us for what promises to be a spectacular day.
Donation/Sponsorship – if you are unable to attend but would still like to help us raise
funds, please indicate this on the reply slip opposite.
Evening Hog Roast – £10 per head at the end of play there will be an informal hog roast dinner and
the opportunity to enjoy a drink with the teams and supporters.

Extensive preparations are going forward in order
to render this auspicious day memorable in Ratcliffe
annals. There will be a solemn Jubilee Service in
the morning in thanksgiving for the blessings
received from God, through Her most Gracious
Majesty, during her long and prosperous reign,
and a concluding service in the evening for the
same end. At night there will be a grand display of
fireworks and a huge bonfire will be lighted at a
signal received from the Malvern Hills. Our beacon
on Mount Pleasant, in the field immediately in front
of the College Farm, will answer that of the Malvern
and Beacon Hills. At other places in
Leicestershire beacons will be lit, viz :—at Naseby
Battle-field, Mill-hill, Market Harborough; Mount-
Sorrel, Broad-Hill, Woodhouse; Waltham-on-thewolds,
Beacon Hills, Charnwood Forest. All these
points will be distinctly visible from Beacon Hill.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Fr Eddie Murphy in a car accident  in Ireland on Friday, 16th March.

Fr Eddie was parish priest of Wisbech, East Anglia, for just under a year; prior to that he had been parish priest in Neath, Sth. Wales which was his first parish appointment after his ordination in March 2007.
He joined the Institute of Charity (Rosminians) in 1976, coming from a period of study at Osterley. Amongst those in the novitiate house at the time was the future bishop, John Arnold, who was eventually to ordain him.
Fr Eddie was dyslexic, something which caused him great frustration over the years.  But he was extraordinarily determined and in the late 80s he successfully completed a degree course in computing, which he used to great advantage. His lifetime dream was to become a priest and  after three attempts at studying for the priesthood was ordained in 2007.
Prior to his ordination he had served  in various Rosminian parishes and houses, assisting with the establishment of computer systems. For a couple of years he had full time employment with the Church Army in London.
Wherever he worked, whether in schools, parish or religious community Eddie, or Ted as he was known to his family, endeared himself to both adults and children alike. He brought with him a charming vivacious personality along with his many gifts and talents.  He was especially sympathetic to the needs of the poor and marginalised and his door was always open to those in difficulty. “No, “I can’t”, or “it’s impossible” were words rarely found in Eddie’s life.
He loved music and could play a number of instruments including the piano, but his favourite was the flute, and he was well on his way to becoming an accomplished fluatist.
Younger OR's will no doubt remember Eddie during his time at Ratcliffe in the early nineties, when he was Bro Eddie Murphy. He was a computer whizkid  and helped out many students during his time here. He was a humble and gentle man and will be greatly missed not only by his Rosminian brethern, but by his parishioners and all who knew him.Fr. Eddie’s wish was to be buried  in Ireland and that wish was fulfilled when he was laid to rest among his Rosminian brethren in St. Patrick's Cemetery Clonmel, just  a short few miles from his home in Waterford. His sudden passing leaves a tremendous void but he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and good deeds and he goes to God,whom he loved above all with those good works gone before him.

May he rest in peace.

Fr David Myers, Provincial
